Paris Paralympics Day 2 Highlights: Shooter Avani Lekhara Clinches Gold, Manish Takes Silver; Sivarajan-Nithya Enter Semis

Here are the highlights of Day 2 of the 2024 Paris Paralympics. India's para-athletes won four medals on the second day of the games. Avani Lekhara won a gold medal, Manish Narwal took a silver medal whereas Mona Agarwal got a bronze medal in shooting. Preethi Pal won another bronze and became the first para-athlete to win a medal in track in the Paralympics.

Today’s medal events will span the para-athletics, para shooting, para track cycling, para swimming, para taekwondo, and para table tennis events.

Today's first medal event is the Para Athletics - Women’s Discus Throw - F55 Final, scheduled for 1:30 PM. Indian athletes will be competing in this event as well.

Manasi Joshi of India kicked off the para badminton action at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in the Women’s Singles Group A match against Ukraine's Oksana Kozyna, taking the first game 21-10.

The women's 10m air rifle standing SH1 shooting qualifying rounds are underway in Chatearoux with India's Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal in action.

So far, both the Indians have made it up to top 8 with Avani at third currently (197.8 points) and Mona at seventh (207.3 points)

After a strong start with a 21-10 win in the first game, Manasi Joshi narrowly lost the second and deciding games to her Ukrainian opponent, with scores of 15-21 and 21-23. Unfortunately, her close defeats to Indonesia's Qonit Syakuroh and Ukraine's Oksana Kozyna have placed Manasi at the bottom of the SL3 women's singles group.

Indian shooters Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal made a spectacular rise in the first two series of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 qualifying round. Heading into the third series, they currently stand in second and fourth place, respectively.

The 22-year-old Avani Lekhara, who won gold at the Tokyo Paralympics, has taken the lead in the qualifying round at Paris 2024 with a total of 522.7 points. Meanwhile, Mona Agarwal has dropped to sixth place.

Meanwhile at the La Chapelle Arena Court 3, India's Manoj Sarkar begins the Men's Singles SL3 Group Play Stage - Group A Match MSSL3106 facing off Mongkhon Bunsun of Thailand.

Here's the final standing of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1

Both the Indians Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal have qualified for the final slated for 3:15PM IST today.

Avani finished second with 625.8 points while Mona completes the final round with 623.1 at fifth.

The next shooting event will see Rudransh Khandelwal and Manish Narwal in action in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 qualification at 2:45 PM IST.

Second Badminton Loss: Manoj Kumar Falls 19-21, 8-21 to Thailand’s Mongkhon Bunsun in Men’s Singles SL3 Group A

On the other hand, Nitesh Kumar is on track for a second win in badminton on day 2, leading 21-5 in the first game and 20-11 in the second against China’s Jianyuang Yang in his Men’s Singles SL3 Group A match.

India's Karamjyoti delivered a standout final throw of 20.22m in the Women's Discus Throw Final - F55 category. While the gold may be out of reach, she still has a chance to secure the silver.

And they did it! Avani Lakhera secures the gold medal and Mona Agarwal claims the bronze in Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1.

Avani scored 249.7 which is yet another Paralympic record. With this, she bettered her own record of 249.6 from Tokyo 2020.

Mona claimed the podium finish with an aggregate of 228.7.

India's Manish Narwal qualified for the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 final finishing fifth with a score of 565.

Meanwhile, Rudransh Khandelwal fell just short of the top eight, ending in ninth place with a score of 561.

The final of men’s 10m air pistol SH1 will start at 5:30PM IST.

Suhas Yathiraj secures another decisive victory in his Paris Paralympics campaign, defeating South Korea’s Hwan Shin Kyung 26-24, 21-14 in their Men’s Singles SL4 Group A match.

India's hopes in table tennis today were dashed as Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel lost their Women’s Doubles WD10 quarterfinal to Korea’s Young A Jung and Sunghye Moon with a scoreline of 5-11, 6-11, 11-9, 6-11.

Arshad Shaikh of India finished ninth in the Men’s C2 3000 Individual Pursuit qualifying with a time of 4:20.949, placing him out of medal contention.

Preeti Pal earns India’s third medal at the Paris Paralympics!

In the Women's 100m T35 final, she finished third with a personal-best time of 14.21 seconds, securing the bronze. This medal marks India's first-ever track event medal in Paralympic history.

Against Indonesia’s Leani Ratri Oktila, India’s Palak Kohli won the first game 21-18 but fell short in the second, losing 5-21. She also lost the decider 13-21.

The shooter Manish Narwal grabs the silver medal with a score of 234.9 in P1 Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event.

Sriharsha narrowly misses the qualification mark by 0.1 points in the Mixed 10m Air Rifle Standing SH2 qualification round, finishing ninth with a score of 630.7.

The fifth-seeded Rakesh Kumar is up against Senegal's Aliou Drame in the men's individual compound open round of 16 match.

He won Game 1 comfortably but Subhan bounced back in the next game to win that with less margin. Game 3 was a close encounter as Coombs emerged as the winner after winning it by 21-18.

Indian para-shuttler Nithya Sre won the first Game comfortably against Cai Yi-Lin of Chinese Taipei.

Sumathy Sivan Nithya Sre won the women's singles SH6 group play stage match in straight games against Chinese Taipei player Cai Yi-Lin. She won the first Game comfortably but she had to fight for the second game which was a close encounter. She won the second Game 21-19.

Para-shuttler Solaimalai Sivarajan lost Game 1 against the opponent from Hong Kong, Chu Man Kai. He lost the game with a margin of 13-21.

Indian para-shuttler Solaimalai Sivarajan won Game 2 against Chu Man Kai of Hong Kong and remained alive in the contest. The winner of Game 3 will win the men's singles SH6 group play stage match.

Para-archer Shyam Sundar Swami lost to Comsan Singpirom of Thailand in a close encounter at the men's individual compound open. After five rounds, the score was tied on 138 points each. The one-arrow shoot-out was followed and Swami hit a 10 in his first attempt. It was looking clear as if the Indian would win but the Thai archer also hit a 10 which was millimetres close to the bullseye, hence he was announced as the winner. Heartbreak for the Indian archer!

Para-shuttler Solaimalai Sivarajan lost to Hong Kong's Chu Man Kai in Game 3 by a 15-21 margin and hence lost the match. He bounced back in Game 2 after losing the first one. This loss brought an end to his campaign in the men's singles SH6 category.

Para-shuttler Krishna Nagar is the next Indian athlete in action on Day 2 of the Paris Paralympics. He will face USA's Miles Krajewski in the men's singles SH6 group play stage match. The match starts shortly.

Ukraine beat Japan 9-8 in the men's goalball preliminary round pool B. The match was in Japan's favour after half-time but Ukraine bounced back in the second half and won the game by a small margin.

Another match has been rescheduled. Indian para-badminton players Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan were supposed to play against Lucas Mazur and Faustine Noel of France in the Mixed Doubles SL3-SU5 Group A. However, the match has been postponed.

Manu failed in the first attempt of his throw but managed to throw a 12.71m in his second attempt of the men's shot put F37 at Paris Paralympics 2024.

Manu has not been in his best form as the Indian athlete is just in sixth place after his fifth attempt. There is only one attempt left and his best is 13.86m. Kudratillokhon Marufkhujaev of Uzbekistan is leading the table with 15.65m.

Suhas Yathiraj and Palak Kohli lost to Indonesia's Hikmat Ramdani-Leani Ratri Oktila in straight games 11-21, 17-21 in mixed doubles SL3-SU5 Group A para badminton match.

Manu missed a medal chance after finishing sixth in the men's shot put F37 category at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Kudratillokhon Marufkhujaev of Uzbekistan won the gold medal with the help of his personal best throw of 16.37m. His compatriot, Tolibboy Yuldashev got bronze medal with 15.24m throw whereas Tunisia's Ahmed Ben Moslah got the silver medal.

Indian ace para-shuttler Krishna Nagar lost the first Game 16-21 against USA's Miles Krajewski in the men's singles SH6 group stage play.

Defending Paralympic champion Krishna Nagar lost to USA's Miles Krajewski in straight sets. He was leading in Game 2 but Krajewski came from behind and won the match with 21-16, 21-18.

The Indian duo of Solaimalai Sivarajan and Nithya Sre are up against the Thai pair of Natthapong Meechai and Chai Saeyang in the mixed doubles SH6 group play stage. The Indian duo won Game 1 by 21-7.

After thrashing the Thai pair of Natthapong Meechai and Chai Saeyang in Game 1, India's Solaimalai Sivarajan and Nithya Sre managed to win Game 2 with 21-17 to easily move to the next round, i.e., semifinals of the mixed doubles SH6.
