Despite playing just seven games, Shami was the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 scalps at an astonishing average of 10.70 and strike-rate of 12.20. His fabulous display includes three 5-wicket hauls (one of which was a seven-for against New Zealand in the semi-final) and a 4-for in the campaign.
However, despite his heroics, him and the team couldn't win the Cup, as they were outplayed in the summit clash by Pat Cummins' team. ?
Shami also spoke about his initial absence from India's playing XI. He had missed the first four games and was only picked after an injury to all-rounder Hardik Pandya. "When you sit out for four matches, you need to be mentally strong. Sometimes you are under pressure but when you see the team performing well and going in a good direction, it gives you satisfaction," Shami said.
