Adding another milestone to his growing list, talented young India batter Shubman Gill has become the fastest in the world to reach 2,000 ODI runs. Shubman got past the 2,000-run mark in his 38th innings, bettering former South Africa opener Hashim Amla's record of 40 innings to score 2,000 runs. Shubman achieved the feat during the India vs New Zealand game in Dharamsala at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where hosts India are chasing a target of 274. At the time of writing, India were at 128/3 in 22 overs, needing 246 more runs in 28 overs for a fifth consecutive win in the showpiece tournament. (Match Blog | Scorecard | Full Coverage)

Ahead of the match, the 24-year-old needed just 14 runs to get to the landmark. And he got there in the seventh over of the Indian run chase with a boundary off Kiwi pacer Trent Boult. With that, Shubman broke the record that stood for 12 whole years. Amla had gone past the 2,000-run aggergate in ODIs on January 21, 2011 against India in Port Elizabeth.

Shubman, unfortunately could not convert his start into a big one, as he was dismissed for 26 off 31 balls in the 14th over, with fast bowler Lockie Ferguson having him caught at deep third.

The top-order batter from Punjab was recently down with dengue, which led to him missing India's first two World Cup games against Australia and Afghanistan. Shubman returned for India's marquee clash against arch-rivals Pakistan but could only score 16. He hit a half-century in India's win against Bangladesh in Pune, which is his highest score since returning.?
