IND Vs ENG, 4th Test, Day 4: Shubman Gill, Dhruv Jurel Star As India Beat England By 5 Wickets In Ranchi, Seal Series - As It Happened

What an end to what's been an enthralling series up until Ranchi. A seesaw battle between two quality teams but India take the bait despite missing their regular stars. No Kohli for the entire series, no KL Rahul for three Tests, no Jadeja for a Test, no Ashwin for half-a-Test, no Bumrah for the 4th Test but Rohit Sharma's men have handed Ben Stokes's Bazballers their first series defeat. On Day 3, Ravichandran Ashwin (5/51) and Kuldeep Yadav (4/22) shared nine wickets to help India dismiss England for 145 in their second innings. Chasing a target of 192 runs, the hosts were 40/0 at stumps as openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal negated the last few overs. They need another 152 to seal the Test match and the series. Former England captain Michael Vaughan was not pleased by the Joe Root dismissal and said cameras should be placed on DRS operators in order to provide ‘transparency,’. “I’m not saying anyone is cheating,” said Vaughan on the Test match Special Podcast. “I’m trying to give an answer for when a decision is made and we all disagree with it. If the person on Hawk-Eye is filmed it puts the noise to bed.”

After completing his half-century, Dhruv Jurel was seen making a military-like salute. The gesture, he said, was to his father, a Kargil War veteran. “Yesterday, I spoke and he indirectly said ‘Son, at least show me a salute’. That is what I have been doing all my growing-up years. It was for him,” he said after the day’s play.

The pitch has played better and better in the first session. It has been curious. It looks awful - the cracks are bigger and it is quite abrasive. But it has played better. The cracks are so big that you can lose a pen in there. England need to hit these cracks consistently. But the middle part of the pitch is still good and the ball is not misbehaving, reckon Graeme Swann and Deep Dasgupta.

Indian openers are out in the middle and we are all set to resume where we left off on day 3.

Half-an-hour into the morning session and there has been few 'oohs and ahs' from the English players but it has been totally dominated by the Indian batters. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have scored freely and India require 121 runs more to win.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was sent back to the pavillion on 37 by Joe Root just as India were getting ahead in the Test match. The southpaw hit straight to 41-year-old Jimmy Anderson who took a low-diving catch.

Gill who has faced 24 deliveries up until now has scored mere 6 runs and is looking pretty defensive at the crease. Pressure building from the English spinners at the other end.

Three wickets in the morning session as slowly given England the edge in the fourth Test. Yashasvi Jaiswal's wicket led the way as Rohit Sharma (52) was stumped off Tom Hartley and then Rajat Patidar (0) was caught by Ollie Pope at backward short-leg.

India faced Bangladesh in Mirpur back in December 2022 and were set a target of 145 to chase. Despite losing seven wickets, the Indian team chased down the target with Ravichandran Ashwin playing the anchor role. Will we see another cliff-hanger here in Ranchi?

India are 118/3 at lunch on day four of the fourth Test match against England at Ranchi. The hosts require another 74 runs to win whereas England need 7 wickets to draw the series. Shubman Gill (18 off 62 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (3 off 29 balls) have remained unbeaten.

India lost Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan in consecutive deliveries to give England a nice start post-lunch. India still require over 50 runs and have now 5 wickets in hand.

Post the double-wicket over from England, the duo of Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel have kept ticking away as they also scored a four that came after 31 overs. The duo have brought down the target to below 50 runs.

India were 120/5 when Dhruv Jurel walked in but the wicketkeeper-batter along with Shubman Gill have joined forces to add 40-plus for the sixth wicket and bring the hosts closer to victory.

India have defeated England by five wickets in the fourth Test in Ranchi to hand Ben Stokes his series defeat.

I think it was a great Test match. If you see the scoreboard, it'll say India won by 5 wickets, but it doesn't give credit to the way things unfolded. I can only be proud of my team, we 've had some inexperienced spinners (Bashir and Hartley), but I'm proud of their efforts. Part of my captaincy is allowing the young guys to revel and the freedom to play in some difficult conditions in India. I am a massive Test cricket fan, the numbers of youngsters coming along in both teams sets things up nicely for the future. If you look yesterday, anything was possible, it was incredibly difficult against the spinners, we knew the pitch wouldn't get any better, as we saw today. I don't think the criticismof Joe Root has been fair, the sheer amount of crickethe's played, he's incredible. So is Bashir, taking 8 wickets after having hardly played a lot of cricket is superb. You want to win series, you want to play and win cricket matches. The only thing I can say is we left nothing on the field, we've fought hard and I'm happy with that.

"It's been a very hard-fought series, so to come on the right side of it feels very good. A lot of challenges thrown at us but we responded and were quite composed. These guys want to be here, growing up in the domestic circuit, local club-cricket, and coming here. It's a big challenge, but the responses I get are encouraging. We have to give them the environment they want to be in, we can't just keep talking to them, they are very clear in what they want to do. Jurel showed composure, calmness and shots all round the wicket. His first-innings 90 was crucial, and again in the second innings along with Gill."

"It's always not pleasing when you miss key players, but there's nothing we can do as a group. To fill their shoes was not easy, but they responded really well. When you make a mark like that, you hold yourself in a good position for a long career. This will motivate them. We turn up to every Test thinking we want to win, this is a great series, want to turn up in fifth and put our best foot forward. Confident we will put on a good show."

"Whatever the situation demands, I want to do that. In our 1st innings, I thought the more runs I score now, the fewer runs we would have to in our 2nd innings. (First innings) Our wickets were falling, and I was batting with lower-order batters, but we got partnerships with them. So they deserve some credit too. (Anderson, Wood) Felt good playing against them because I saw them on TV. Focus was on seeing the ball, not the bowler."
