A seven-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu went to the police after her father broke his promise to build a toilet in the house.

On?Monday, Hanifa Zaara went to the police station with her mother to file a complaint against his father Ehsanullah.

Zaara told the police in a letter that her father had "cheated" her and should, therefore, be arrested. She said that she was "ashamed" to defecate outside, reported?BBC.

"I have been topping my class since nursery," she wrote. "I am in the second grade now. And he is still only saying he will do it. This is a form of cheating, so please arrest him,” she said.

Zaara lives with her parents in Ambur and has never had a toilet in her house.

She said that a few people in her neighbourhood did have a toilet and she asked her father to build one too.? "I was ashamed to go outside and I felt bad when people looked at me," Zaara told BBC.

Zaara’s father told BBC that he had started building the toilet but did not have enough money to complete it.

Her efforts won police’s support. "We were very happy to see her complaint. We organise classes in schools to encourage children to ask their parents for toilets at home," city commissioner S Parthasarathy told BBC.

As the news spread, the Ambur Municipality Commissioner announced Zaara as the brand ambassador for the Swachh Bharat mission, The News Minute reported.

The local body has also taken up construction of a toilet in her house, under the Swachh Bharat scheme.
