Tamil superstar Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, popularly known as 'Thalapathy' Vijay, has announced his political party and named it Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam loosely translates to 'Tamil Nadu Victory Party'.

Announcing the launch of his party, Vijay said they are not going to contest the 2024 elections and neither are they going to support any party. "We have made this decision for General and Executive Council Meeting," the statement said.

Vijay said his party will fight the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The 49-year-old, who has worked primarily in Tamil films, is among the highest paid actors in India and has featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list on seven times.

'Thalapathy' Vijay was born as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar on June 22, 1974 ,in Tamil Nadu's Chennai to A Chandrasekhar, a Tamil film director and Shoba Chandrasekhar, a popular singer.

The announcement prompted celebrations from Vijay's fans, even as speculation were rife for some time about the actor taking the political plunge in a state known for stars graduating from cinema to politics, including the late veterans MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.

"I have decided to complete the film I have already committed to, without affecting the party work and completely involve myself in the politics of public service... I consider this as my gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu," Vijay said in his statement.
