Persistent heavy rainfall continues to impact the southern state of Kerala, causing flooding in various cities. Authorities are urging residents in high and low-lying areas to remain vigilant. Landslides have been reported in the hilly regions of Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, while intense waterlogging is disrupting normal life in low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta due to incessant rainfall, signifying heavy to extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours, as reported by Hindustan Times.

In response to rising water levels, officials have opened the shutters of the Kallarkutty and Pambla dams in Idukki districts, resulting in widespread damage to agriculture and properties in the Thiruvalla and Konni areas.

Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, and Kunnathanam have been heavily affected, recording 15 centimeters of rainfall each, leading to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Enadimangalam, Peermade, and Ottapalam have also experienced significant rainfall, with 13, 12, and 11 centimeters, respectively.

Meanwhile, the impact of heavy rainfall extends to the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, where several districts, including Tenkasi, Viruthunagar, Pudhukottai, Nilgiri, Theni, Thirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Thoothukudi, have declared holidays for schools. The Chennai meteorological department forecasts heavy to very heavy rain in various districts, with thunderstorms and moderate rain expected in other areas.

As both states grapple with the consequences of continuous downpours, authorities are emphasizing the need for caution and preparedness to mitigate the impact on communities and infrastructure.
