Security Breach In Parliament: Om Birla Says Two Intruders Arrested, Smoke 'Not A Matter Of Concern'
On Wednesday two men jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery and opened gas-emitting canisters.
“As per the preliminary investigation, both of them (suspects) have been held, and all their belongings have been seized. The two suspects, who were outside, have also been arrested,” Birla stated in the Parliament.
"The incident that happened during Zero House, that is being investigated by the Lok Sabha and Delhi Police has been given requisite directions regarding the same. However, the smoke, which was the reason of our worry, has been found in preliminary investigation that it's not a matter of concern," said Birla.
The Speaker's assurance came after footage from the Lok Sabha's close-circuit television camera system captured one man evading security personnel by leaping across desks, and another releasing smoke from a canister. MPs and security staff promptly subdued both individuals.
On the same day in 2001, terrorists had entered the Parliament complex and began shooting with AK-47 rifles. The attack left nine people dead. On the twenty-second anniversary of the attacks, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid tributes to the security personnel who had lost their lives.
