In Pictures: Beneath The Grandeur Of G20 Summit, Lie Delhi’s Poorest

While curtains came down on the two-day mega G20 Summit in New Delhi on Sunday, questions remain unanswered regarding how the poor, who were forcefully displaced from their homes as part of a ‘beautification drive’, will be rehabilitated. The national capital is currently decked up with colourful paintings, murals adorn several flyovers, walls and metro stations, and refurbishment of roads was carried out in full swing ahead of the summit, but all at the cost of the poor. The Centre, along with the Delhi government, incurred over Rs 4,100 crore in expenses to deck up Delhi for the summit – from maintenance of roads to G20 branding. While emphasis was on spending funds to develop the urban areas of the city, slums and local kirana stores on route to the G20 venue were covered with green sheets. Beneath the green sheets, lies the city’s most vulnerable population and beneath the grandeur of the summit is how poverty, and other pressing issues were kept concealed from global leaders.
