An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Doda district in?eastern?Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon. Tremors were felt across northern parts of India, including?Delhi and its adjoining areas.

Earthquake of 5.4 magnitude struck Jammu and Kashmir this afternoon. Tremors were felt in Delhi and parts of north India.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck at a depth of 6 kilometres at 1:33 PM.
According to Dr OP Mishra, NCS Director, the tremors might have been felt in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Punjab and adjoining areas. He also said there may be?aftershocks of lesser magnitude than the main shock.
Panic ensued as people rushed out of their homes and offices. Students at a secondary school in?Jammu and Kashmir's Doda were also?taken to safety?after the earthquake. Speaking to?PTI, an official said that it is common practice and the teachers and staff are also asked to avoid causing panic and take children to safer locations once the tremors stop.
"The earthquake scared school children. People in shops rushed out. It was scary. This was more intense than the tremors last week..." a?local from Srinagar was quoted as saying to news agency ANI.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
