Amid fresh violence in Manipur over the deaths of two Meitei students who went missing in July, the Ministry of Home Affairs?today repatriated top Srinagar police official Rakesh Balwal to the northeastern state.?

After photos of the bodies of two youths who went missing in July went viral on social media, students led protests in the violence-hit state, demanding strict punishment against the perpetrators.?Curfew was re-imposed in the two districts -- Imphal East and West -- as the security forces combatted the violent protests, which saw 65 demonstrators being injured since Tuesday.

Rakesh Balwa,?a 2012-batch IPS officer?has been serving as the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Srinagar and has garnered recognition for his efforts in reducing the crime rate in the region. He was transferred from the Manipur cadre to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre for a three-year period in November this year as part of a policy relaxation.

He was?also part of the NIA team that presented the court with the 13,800-page charge sheet in the Pulwama terror attack, which resulted in a slew of arrests.
