In a rare occurrence, Kelsey Hatcher, a woman born with a condition known as double uterus (uterine didelphys), defied the odds by giving birth to twin girls, each carried in a separate uterus. The extraordinary event took place in Dora, Alabama, with one baby delivered vaginally on December 19, followed by the second delivered via c-section on December 20 after 20 hours of labor.
Alabama Woman With Two Uteruses Gives Birth To Twins
The birth of twin girls born to the same mother but in different uteruses amazed everyone. Girls are born healthy and safe.
Hatcher, already a mother of three, expressed her joy on Instagram, stating, "Our miracle babies were born! They decided they were rare enough statistically that they should just go ahead and have their own birthdays too."
Roxi, the firstborn, entered the world at 7:45 p.m. on December 19, weighing 7 pounds 7 ounces. Rebel, the second twin, was delivered via c-section over 10 hours later, at 6:10 a.m. on December 20, weighing 7 pounds 3.5 ounces.
Hatcher, born with two uteruses and two cervixes, acknowledged the support of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in a press release. Only 0.3 percent of individuals with uteruses experience this condition, which can lead to pain, fertility issues, or remain asymptomatic.
Dr. Richard Davis, a maternal and fetal medicine specialist at UAB's Women & Infants Center, noted the rarity of Hatcher's situation, stating that the odds of being pregnant in both uteruses simultaneously are about "1 in a million."
This unique pregnancy marked Hatcher's fourth with her husband Caleb, and the first time she carried one baby in each uterus. Though the babies occupied separate "apartments," Davis referred to them as fraternal twins.
"After such a long and crazy journey, it meant the world to see both of my girls together for the first time," said Hatcher, reflecting on the exceptional birth experience.
