The British government has appointed Elan Closs Stephens as the acting chair for the BBC, following the resignation of Richard Sharp over a conflict of interest. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer announced Stephens' appointment, stating that she has the unanimous support of the board and will bring stability to the national broadcaster.

Stephens, who has been on the BBC's governing body since 2010, expressed her commitment to ensuring the BBC remains a vital partner for the UK's creative industries and adapts to the changing media landscape. However, her tenure may coincide with a sensitive period as the UK's next general election approaches, placing the BBC under scrutiny to maintain impartiality in political matters.

The timing of the election rests in the hands of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, with expectations that it may not be called until the fall of 2024. Stephens replaces Richard Sharp, who resigned in April after his involvement in arranging a loan for Prime Minister Boris Johnson came to light. Sharp remained in the position until a successor was appointed.
