'Girls Will Be Girls' Trailer Review: Richa Chadha-Ali Fazal Maiden Production Is Not Your Average Coming-Of-Age Story
Directed by Shuchi Talati, 'Girls Will Be Girls' has been selected to be premiered in the World Dramatic Cinema Category at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie has been produced by Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal.
The trailer of ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ opens with a shot of a young girl who is addressing a school assembly. It is revealed that she is the Prefect and is reading out her pledge. As the trailer progresses, it is revealed that the movie is based in a small hill station in North India. The plot revolves around the Prefect and the rules the school has in place for girls. The story moves and we are introduced to the girl’s mother who is strict with her. However, things turn out differently when the girl starts to piece together the things that are happening around her.
Take a look at the trailer of ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ here.
When I first watched the trailer of this film, a lot of parts felt relatable. There is a scene where a teacher tells the girl students the appropriate length of their skirts and how they should stay away from boys. It reminded me of the numerous times my teachers ushered the girls to a different class to tell us exactly these same things. The first half of the trailer felt relatable, but it didn’t look like anything that we had not seen before. But as the trailer progresses and the narrative witnesses a turn, I was absolutely glued. I have a thing for clever twists and turns. And in this trailer, the twist was definitely unexpected.
What felt like a cliché coming-of-age story of a young girl captivated me because it covers not just her but also her mother. The title feels very apt in this sense.
