Cyclone Biparjoy Makes Landfall In Gujarat: Dos And Don'ts To Stay Safe

The landfall process of Cyclone Biparjoy has begun on the Kutch coast. While officials and authorities are working to ensure efficient evacuation of everyone living in high-risk areas, it is crucial to take measures to keep oneself safe as well.

The landfall process of Cyclone Biparjoy?has begun?near Jakhau Port in Gujarat's Kutch district after churning across the Arabian Sea for over 10 days. Although officials and authorities are working to ensure efficient evacuation of everyone living in high-risk areas, it is crucial to take measures to keep oneself safe as well.?

As people are increasingly concerned about their safety, the National Disaster Management Authority of India (NDMA) has released a set of recommendations that civilians should follow.?

1. Keep all doors and windows shut to prevent the strong winds from entering your home, and keep all electrical appliances unplugged or switched off. If lightning strikes, it can cause electricity to burst through power lines, and do extreme amounts of damage. Keep phones and other electronic devices full-charged, and wrap valuables in waterproof containers or bags.?

2. Stay informed and alert about updates on the cyclone, but only rely on information from official sources. It is imperative to steer clear of misinformation and rumours. The NDMA has suggested listening to the radio or transistor to always remain in the loop.

3. Remove branches, trees, or loose furniture outside your house so that they cause minimal damage. If you have any pets or animals living with you, keep them untied to ensure their safety as well.?

4. Remain indoors as much as possible. If you are required to leave the shelter of your home, try to avoid electrical poles, dilapidated buildings, and sharp objects as much as possible. Do not go to beaches, lakes, or other low-lying areas which may be at risk of high tides and storm waves.?

5. Buy medicines and other essentials – create a first aid kit to use in case of emergencies, and make sure that you have enough non-perishable food and water at home to last you for a few days. Have a supply of torches or matches and candles ready in case the power goes out. Try to get vaccinated against as many diseases as possible before the storm lands.?
