In Pictures | From Bela Estate To Kashmere Gate, Evictions In Delhi Ahead Of G20 Summit

The lives of lakhs of labourers, plumbers, carpenters, house helps and others living in mud houses have turned upside down in Delhi amid the so-called beautification drive in the capital city since India took over the G20 presidency last year. Slum dwellers have been haplessly uprooted from areas including Bela Estate, Qudsia Ghat, Nigambodh Ghat, Kashmere Gate, Pragati Maidan etc. with nowhere else to go just to make the city look “cleaner” when the high-level dignitaries arrive for the highly-anticipated Summit. In the process of beautification, the authorities have seemingly indulged in the whitewashing of Delhi’s footpaths, river banks and archaeological sites, forgetting to make any provisions for shelter for those evicted from their homes.
